EuroMillions History

EuroMillions, the pan-European lottery, has been giving thrills,NL excitement and awesome lump sum tax-free cash prizes for more than five years.

The history of EuroMillions may only go back to February 2004, but, in less than
six years, it has brought so much pleasure, not to mention so many massive jackpots, that it feels as though it’s been around much longer.

Recent EuroMillions history goes back to its launch on 7 February 2004. Days before the draw in Paris players held their breath, with the first ever jackpot of €15 million. Initially, only the UK, France and Spain played euro millions, and there were three main organisers: Camelot in the UK, Francaise des Jeux in France and the Spanish Loterias y Apuestas del Estado.

So it was a defining moment in euro millions history when national lotteries from six other European countries – Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium, Portugal and Luxembourg – allowed their residents to play EuroMillions.

But in many ways EuroMillions history began in 1994. The original idea was to launch the new Europe-wide lottery to coincide with the single European currency, but for various reasons these plans were scuppered, meaning EuroMillions took another ten years to come to fruition.

National LotteryThroughout EuroMillions history, there have been some amazing wins. An Irish player, Dolores McNamara, scooped £77 million in July 2005, making her the biggest individual winner in the history of EuroMillions until May 2009, when £110m was won on a single ticket. The win followed six weeks of rollovers, and made an unknown Spanish woman the single biggest winner in EuroMillions history.

The highest ever jackpot was over €183 million, shared between three people.
